ome of us forego preventive and routine
care, mostly because of cost, but also because
we’d rather do almost anything than
go see a doctor. Add to that how tough it can
be to navigate complex healthcare systems,
and it becomes clear why, over time, we as a
nation endure increased chronic conditions
and pay enormous medical costs.
Gouverneur Healthcare Services and the
Bialystoker Synagogue have now joined
forces to bring many of the vital preventive
care screenings into the community – all
free of charge.
The Lower East Side Family Health Day
will be Sunday, January 11, 10–3, at the
Orenstein Pavillion on 15-17 Willett Street. It
is a collaboration of Gouverneur, Bialystoker
Synagogue, and community partners including
the United Jewish Council, LoHo
Realty, The Jewish Heritage for the Blind,
Americare, and Eyes and Optics.
Free screenings will be available for depression,
dental, podiatry, glaucoma, vision,
blood pressure and glucose. “As always,
Gouverneur is attending to the health and
wellness needs of the Grand Street community,”
says Dr. Marc Wilkenfeld, a lifelong
Lower East Side resident and a physician
at Gouverneur’s World Trade Center
Environmental Health Center.
Community residents will have the opportunity
to speak with Dr. Wilkenfeld,
as well as several other Gouverneur medical
professionals, and receive advice and
healthy living tips about the World Trade
Center Environmental Health Center, smoking
cessation, diabetes, finding a balanced
diet, yoga, managing stress, Food Stamps,
Medicare Part D, EPIC and other social
services.
"Judaism stresses the importance of properly
caring for one's body, which is, after all,
the repository of the soul," said Rabbi Zvi
Romm, spiritual leader of the Bialystoker
Synagogue. "We urge our neighborhood
residents to utilize this Health Fair to fulfil
the Torah's command to protect and
strengthen ourselves."
Gouverneur recognizes that many members
of the Grand Street community are not
receiving the care that they need, particularly
for services like ophthalmology, podiatry
and behavioral health. This event will provide
residents with greater access to much
needed services.
Games and prizes will be available for
children, and there will be free giveaways,
refreshments and healthy snacks for all participants.
